Kitchen Cabinets All The Way To Ceiling. High storage is great for holiday stuff and things you do not use on a regular basis. The standard height of the ceiling on the second floor has also changed to 8 or 9 feet tall.

With this kitchen, there was a furr down (was.yay!) which was removed, that made space for the additional cabinets we added above. With upper cabinets i would always choose to have them meet the ceiling. Use a nail gun to nail through the boards into the cabinets and ceiling.

In the previous remodel, we really didn't have enough height for the cabinet, so we boxed in that area and paneled it, so that the cabinet felt like they were full height. Any gap between the cabinet and the ceiling becomes an unholy mess of grease, dust and lint after a period of time. Also, if you get 42 cabinets and take them to the ceiling without crown molding, make sure they are partial overlay cabinet doors for the same reasons above. So, 36 high base cabinets and 18 of space above the countertop gets us to 54 inches so far.
